Strain‐Engineered Metal‐to‐Insulator Transition and Orbital Polarization in Nickelate Superlattices Integrated on Silicon

Asst. prof. dr. M. Spreitzer, Dr. J. Belhadi and Dr. Z. Jovanović from the Advanced Materials Department of Jožef Stefan Institute, in collaboration with researchers from the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and France, published an article in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials entitled »Strain-Engineered Metal-to-Insulator Transition and Orbital Polarization and Nickelate Superlattices Integrated on Silicon«. In this work, the authors showed the possibility of efficient integration of superstructures from functional oxides with a silicon platform. For the LaNiO3/ LaFeO3 system, the dependence of the metal-to-insulator transition on the thickness of the LaNiO3 layer was determined, for structures integrated on the silicon single crystals with the SrTiO3 intermediate layer. In addition, it was observed that obtained functional properties can be further engineered using mechanical tensile strain. The work was coordinated by Prof. dr. Gertjan Koster, who is a visiting scientist at the Advanced Materials Department of Jožef Stefan Institute, as a part of the international M-ERA.NET project SIOX.
